Thirsties Duo All-in-One Diaper Review by Really Are You Serious

Cloth diapering. Yep, still going well. And, Mr. Serious even changes the diapers. I don’t think he’s complained one time about it, either.
His favorite, go-to, will-always-grab-it, hope-it’s-clean-when-he-does-a-change is the Thirsties Duo All-In-One diaper. So I try to make sure it’s clean so he could use it (I guess I could buy a couple more, too!). Thirsties diapers are all made in the USA!  This one is FREE of VOC’s, PVC, phthalates, and lead

The “Duo” made by Thirsties means there are two sizes. Size 1 (approximately 6-18lbs) and Size 2 (approximately 18-40lbs). Both sizes have the snap downs on the front to adjust the rise so you truly get the perfect fit.
When E was born, she was 8lbs 10oz. She still fit into the Size One with the smallest snap setting (shown below). At one month, and I’m guessing around 11 lbs, I just changed it to the middle snaps.

If you aren’t familiar with the terminology, AIO means that the diaper is good to go. It’s most similar to a disposable. Out of the wash and straight on the bum with no work. The outer is 100% polyester with waterproof urethane coating (so it’s waterproof…no cover needed). The inner lining is 100% polyester microfleece and the inner soaker is 100% polyester with 3 layers of microfiber terry. Know that there is no microterry touching the baby’s skin…that is underneath the inner lining.

Thirsties has done something a little different. They’ve added a tunnel to the AIO. The tunnel has two purposes, I think. One is you can add extra absorbancy with an insert for overnight if your child needs it.

Also, I find the tunnel helps it dry faster because I can turn it inside out (like shown) and pin it open so air moves through it. However, I will say, because this is an AIO it does take longer than pockets and inserts to dry. I’ve only air dried it, but Thirsties says you can actually dry it in the dryer on low or medium heat. This would probably speed it up.

How does it fit our newborn? On the smallest rise setting, it was a perfect fit. It even hit underneath her cord stub (a common concern for non-newborn diapers). We did have to put the snaps on the tightest setting. I’m thinking if your newborn was smaller, you might want to have the option for cross–over snaps.

It was nice and tight on her legs, too. No leaks there! She has some redness, but this is from the previous diaper. This one hasn’t left a mark on her.

We’ve given this diaper a run for it’s money. As soon as it’s dry, Mr. Serious uses it and puts it on her. So, she’s worn it every 2-3 days for the past month. We’ve never once experienced a leak. She’s worn it both day and night (and has gone 7 hours at night)!
Washing it has been a little trickier. I feel like it holds onto the smells a little more than other diapers. But, remember, this is my first time washing cloth diapers and I still haven’t perfected my wash routine!
Here’s Thirstie’s picture of the inside just so you can tell exactly all of the parts I’m talking about.

To summarize, we are really pleased with the fit, absorbancy and ease of use for the diaper. The only slight downfall is the drying time and the fact that I’m still trying to figure out the best washing routine…but that’s not dependent on the diaper.
I’d love to see another option for the Duo. I’m finding I really like natural fibers best, so I’d love to see some bamboo or hemp instead of the microfiber inside the diaper. I think it would help with the smell issues as well as make it even more absorbent! If you want to see all of their other products, you can request a catalog from Thirsties.
