Shocking food storage at Kemas kindergartens
PETALING JAYA: Audit officers who checked several Kemas (Community Development Department) kindergartens in Kedah and Kelantan got a shock of their lives.
They found food stored in unhygienic places, including in areas filled with cockroach droppings, the Auditor-General said in his 2010 report.
There were food, some expired, kept in toilets, drawers, classrooms and next to paint spray cans.
The state Kemas offices said food were kept in such places due to lack of storage spaces.
The report noted that was lack of training on food storage management despite the centres having bought storage racks and cupboards.
The report found that some kindergartens were not providing children with multivitamins or nutritious food as they should.
Audit checks revealed that 55.2% or 79 of the 143 kindergartens inspected were serving food not prescribed by the Kemas headquarters.
However from feedback, Kemas gathered that the menu and recipes were sometimes not properly followed as they were not distributed to the kindergartens.
Other reasons were that the children did not like the menu food, there was no time to cook or the ingredients were pricy or difficult to obtain.

OWC sex guide under review by Home Ministry
PETALING JAYA: The Home Ministry is studying the contents of the controversial sex guide book released by the Obedient Wives Club (OWC) before taking action.
Sources from the Al-Quran Text and Publishing Control division said they were working with the Islamic Development Department (Jakim) in studying the contents of the book, mStar reports.
“We are currently unable to determine the status of the book but work is under way.
“The issue is that this book involves the belief of the al-Arqam group, which is why the cooperation of Jakim is crucial to determine the status of the book,” said the source.
The source was referring to the statement made by the club that it was going ahead with the global launch of Seks Islam, Perangi Yahudi untuk Kembalikan Seks Islam kepada Dunia (“Islamic sex, fighting Jews to return Islamic sex to the world”) despite protests from women's groups.
The 115-page book had, among others, supposedly encouraged Muslim husbands to have sex simultaneously with their wives.
The OWC was formed by Global Ikhwan Sdn Bhd, an organisation founded by former members of the banned al-Arqam.
The report said approval must be obtained from the Kemas headquarters for any menu changes.
The audit, conducted between July and October last year, found the overall management of the food programme to be satisfactory as 99.5% of the classroom target had been met.

Govt to post pictures of students who skip school on website to shame them
MALACCA: In a bid to curb rising truancy here, the state government will create a website for the public to post pictures of errant students to shame them.
State Education, Youth and Sports Committee chairman Datuk Gan Tian Loo said the state authorities were collaborating with IT experts to create the dedicated website.
“Pictures of students loitering in shopping complexes will be posted on the website,” he told The Star yesterday.
Gan said the state needed “tangible evidence” to counter the menace which has been on the rise.
“Once the picture is provided to us, we will also print and produce the proof for the parents. Many are unwilling to accept what their children have been up to,'' he added.
Gan said secondary schools here had a database of their students with details of the parents.
He said students playing truant usually put on another shirt or blouse to avoid being identified.
“But they wear their school shoes and pants and we know who they are.”
Gan noted that the lepak culture was also beginning to catch up among female students who spent hours at shopping complexes instead of attending classes.
“During a recent swoop, dozens of students, both boys and girls, were caught red-handed loitering at a famous shopping complex in the city centre. Some were even walking about in full uniform,'' he said of the Ops Ponteng crackdown.
Gan identified Dataran Pahlawan, Mahkota Parade, Melaka Central and the Batu Berendam commercial hub as the popular hangouts.
