Can one parent stay home? By BRIGITTE ROZARIO

We all know of women (and men) who gave up their jobs and careers to stay home and take care of the children. For some, it is a temporary move. For others, it is permanent. While it looks like something fairly simple, the decision for one person to give up their job to stay home is in reality a huge one and involves a lot of planning, thinking and discussing.

Carol Yip, founder and CEO of Abacus for Money, says it's not just women who give up their jobs. Sometimes, when the wife is earning more, the husband might give up his job to stay home and take care of the children.
“This is a major change for the whole family and the decision needs to be made by the husband and wife. As such it should be done with the view that you will not change your mind in 10 years' time, because if the husband or wife leaves their job, chances are they may not get reemployed in future. So, it is usually a long-term change,” says Yip.

As this is a big decision, couples should consider if their house …

Blogger couple’s marriage on the rocks

THE marriage of two well-known husband and wife bloggers is on the rocks, and the public gets to find out about it through the wife’s blog entries in the past few days, reported Kosmo!
Blogger Mamasita Mamamia! whose real name is Datin Nurulhuda Ghazali, 52, announced through her blog entries that she had requested a divorce from her husband of 30 years, political blogger Sakmongkol AK47, who is former state assemblyman for Pulau Manis, Datuk Mohd Ariff Sabri Abdul Aziz, 54.
In her entry on Saturday, the mother of seven said her husband had wanted to delay the inevitable until after the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia exam was over, but she insisted that the divorce must take place before the fasting month starts on Aug 11.
Nurulhuda also mentioned about how difficult it was for her to come to a decision to end their marriage.
However, she said she had accepted the fact that her husband now loves another woman.
“A good man deserves to be with someone he loves,” she wrote.
Unlike his wife, Mo…

Dads: How to share in your wife's pregnancy

Sentuhan Bayu: I love this article. So dads! Pay Attention!

Pregnancy is seen as mostly a woman's thing. Few women believe that their husband really understands what's involved. And the fact is, many of us dads-to-be don't. We talk about it. We show interest. We empathise (without going overboard). We even try to read about it, at least a little. But let's face it, our experience of having a baby is fairly removed from the real thing until we're face to face with nappy changing and sleep deprivation. No dad can possibly relate to the minute-by-minute, close-to-the-heart, kick-in-the-gut reality of carrying a baby to term. But we can participate. We can be there to listen to the first heartbeat, we can cut back on the beer or wine, we can pore over the naming books together, and more. Here are 10 ways you can be there, too.

Face your fear
If you feel a sense of unreality coupled with raw fear, you're only normal. Will you be a good dad? Will your baby be born wi…

What is Applied Behavioral Analysis? By Wendy Ponte

As infants, most of us learn basic survival and communication skills by observing the details of our environment and how it responds to us. Then, as we grow up, we extend what we have learned to other areas of our lives and into more formal learning situations. For reasons that are still unclear, autistic children are unable to do this.

The process of applied behavioral analysis (ABA) replicates this normally inborn ability with a teaching process that seems to train the brains of autistic children to interact with the world around them.

Behavioral science stems from the work of John Watson in the early 1900s and, later, the work of B. F. Skinner. The term applied behavioral analysis simply means that the principles of behavioral science have been applied to strategies—in this case, strategies designed for autistic children—that help shape behavior.

In the world of autism, most people tend to link ABA with the work of Dr. O. Ivar Lovaas. In fact, Lovaas's model is not the only typ…

Caring for Wool

Sentuhan Bayu: An old article from Diaper Pin which I find useful for wool lovers.  Enjoy reading & happy cloth diapering!

By Diaper Pin - Friday, September 15, 2006

Wool is a fabric made of fleece of sheep or lamb. It's water repelling properties and breathability are what make it popular for use as a diaper cover. Many choose wool because it is natural.
Take special care when washing and drying your wool products or they will dry out and become stiff. You may be discouraged from purchasing wool because of the extra care required but do not let that stop you from trying this wonderful fabric). It is worth the work to keep only fabrics close to your child's skin.

Use the following steps when caring for your wool products:

- once a week or when your wool covers become soiled, hand wash using 1 tablespoon of Eucalan Woolwash and warm water. Do not rinse. Eucalan® contains Eucalyptus which is a natural moth inhibitor and Lanolin which is a natural conditioner found in wool (…

Is your child a pervert? By BRIGITTE ROZARIO

Does your young daughter like to touch your breast? Have you found your young son peeping at you as you change your clothes? Have you found evidence that your teenage son has been masturbating? Most parents are not sure of what to do when they are in such a situation. Do any of these actions/behaviours mean that your child is a pervert?

Can children be perverts?
Elaine Yong, developmental psychologist and lecturer at Sunway University College, explains that children can indeed be perverts as there is no age limit. She explains that a child who is a pervert can be someone who was previously abused and he is just modelling the behaviour towards someone younger.
“I don't think it's not possible for children to be perverts. When you say a child is a pervert that means the sexual behaviour is unhealthy; they are using aggression and it interferes with normal childhood activities and interests. That's when I would say that person is a pervert.
“If a 12 year old is forcing himself on…

Fun dining

Childwise
By RUTH LIEW

Enjoy eating out with your toddler.
EATING out is part of our rich Malaysian culture. We have many family-style restaurants to choose from. Some even provide babysitting services while you dine. However, I do not encourage parents to let a complete stranger remove their child to another area. While it is a good idea to cultivate healthy eating habits and proper table manners in your child from young, do not have expectations which are beyond your child’s ability to cope. Children cannot sit still for long and they cannot eat everything you want them to try.

Toddlers are curious. When they are presented with new things in a positive manner, they will try them. As they grow older, they may develop their own preferences and start to be picky about food.Studies have shown that repeated introductions to different foods can help to develop children’s taste buds. On average, it takes about 10 attempts before children will even try a new food, let alone enjoy it.You will …

Disposable Diapers Linked to Asthma

Harsh perfumes and chemical emissions have long been known to induce asthma-like symptoms in children and adults. Now, researchers have found that disposable diapers might be a trigger for asthma.
A study published in the October, 1999 issue of the Archives of Environmental Health found that laboratory mice exposed to various brands of disposable diapers suffered increased eye, nose, and throat irritation, including bronchoconstriction similar to that of an asthma attack. Six leading cotton and disposable diaper brands were tested; cloth diapers were not found to cause respiratory problems among the lab mice.

Dr. Rosalind C. Anderson, lead author of the report, "Acute Respiratory Effects of Diaper Emissions," explains that the diapers were tested right out of the package, and one at a time. Even in a mid-sized room, the emissions from one diaper were high enough to produce asthma-like symptoms. Solvents and other substances are typically added to products during the manufact…

Fuel Price Rise Again - Let's read the news.

Sentuhan Bayu: I read earlier either this week or last, the government won't raise subsidised item soon. But, only last night we were slapped with price hike. Yes, it is not much - according to the government. Unfortunately, most rakyat like us ( who is only lower & middle income group) is already struggling as it is.
Before I rambling more nonsense, read this. I'll go & hunt for that old news.

Govt’s bold move will have minimal impact on people, says PM - Friday July 16, 2010
KUALA LUMPUR: The Government’s bold move to cut subsidies for sugar, petrol, diesel and liquefied petroleum gas will have minimal impact on individuals and families.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the Government will adopt an approach that will not burden the people when implementing the subsidy rationalising plan.
“The rationalisation move is necessary to reduce Government expenditure and strengthen the country’s financial position.
“It will help reduce the fiscal deficit so that w…

Nine myths and facts about lightning - By Lori Bongiorno

Scientists have been studying lightning for hundreds of years. Although they have a pretty good idea about what causes it, there is still more to learn about these mysterious sparks of electricity. Given that summer is peak season for thunderstorms, it's probably a good idea to brush up on your lightning facts, particularly if you have some outdoor adventures planned.

Tornadoes and hurricanes are more dangerous than lightning
Myth: Lightning kills more people (about 58) each year than tornadoes or hurricanes. In fact, it is the most underrated weather hazard, according to the National Weather Service. Only floods are routinely responsible for more deaths than lightning.

You can get struck by lightning when you're inside
Fact: It's true that being inside a building when lightning strikes is your safest bet, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't take some precautions.
If a building gets struck the electrical current will most likely travel through the wiring or plumbing…

Restored Da Vinci painting reveals hidden details

LONDON (AP): A restoration project for Leonardo da Vinci's "Virgin of the Rocks" has revealed new details and suggest the Renaissance artist may have painted all the picture himself, instead of with his assistants as previously thought, a British gallery said Wednesday.
The 18-month conservation project involved removing much of some badly degraded varnish that was applied to the painting in the late 1940s, enabling experts to take a much closer look at the picture's brush strokes and styles, the National Gallery said.
The cleaning revealed the painting's full tonal range, especially in the darker areas, and resulted in a clearer sense of how the artist intended for space to recede through the rocky landscape, the gallery said.
It also affirmed that Leonardo likely painted the entire picture himself and intended for it to be unfinished.
The restored painting showed a range of completion from the barely sketched hand of the angel to the fully realized heads of the…

Tell the truth - By RUTH LIEW

Be honest with our children and make them feel worthy. CHILDREN need adults to say it as it is. They can understand what you expect of them when you state it clearly without any put-downs or pressure. Being honest with our children can help draw us closer to them. In turn, they will let us know exactly how they feel without having to exaggerate or make up stories.
Take, for example, a two-year-old who is running across the room. His mother calls out to him: “Don’t run! You will fall down and hurt yourself.”

What she really wants him to do is to walk or find something to occupy his attention. She should say: “You are looking for something to do. Let’s search the toy box for something you like.”When children misbehave, parents will point out what they do not like and tell them to stop that behaviour. Children need to know exactly what the right kind of behaviour is. They need to know that making mistakes is part of learning.

When five-year-old Janet lost her water tumbler in the kinderga…

Man rapes teen despite mum’s pleas

The Star, Wednesday July 14, 2010

A MAN ignored his mother’s plea and raped a 16-year-old girl at home, reported Harian Metro.
The victim, a schoolgirl, had been invited to the man’s house in Setapak Jaya, Kuala Lumpur on the pretext of being introduced to his family.
However, soon after she was introduced to the man’s mother, he dragged her into his room before locking the door and raping her.
It was reported that the mother had tried to plead with the man through the door and was shocked to see her son raping the girl when she peeked through the window of his room.
A source said the teenager, who was raped four times during the incident last month, did not lodge a police report earlier because the man had promised to “take responsibility” for his actions.
However, the man, who is in his early 20s, had subsequently refused to marry her after she was confirmed to be pregnant.
The man was arrested on Monday after the teenager lodged a report with the Wangsa Maju police sta…

13 ways to use cucumbers - By Melissa Breyer

Ah the humble cucumber ... maybe someone will make some pickles, maybe Mom will slice off a few rounds for her tired eyes ... but really, aside from that, what is a cucumber's claim to fame? Actually, the cucumber is a pretty amazing piece of work, both in the kitchen and in the bathroom where it can perform a multitude of beauty tasks.

The flesh of the cucumber is mostly water, but also contains ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and caffeic acid, both of which help soothe skin irritations and reduce swelling -- these acids prevent water retention, which may explain why cucumbers applied topically are often helpful for swollen eyes, burns, and dermatitis.

Cucumbers are a great treat for the skin. They have the same pH as the skin so they help restore the protective acid mantle -- they also possess hydrating, nourishing, and astringent properties. Cucumbers' skin is rich in fiber and contains a variety of beneficial minerals including silica, potassium, and magnesium. The silica in c…

Is plastic making us fatter? - By Lori Bongiorno

Researchers are exploring how some of the synthetic chemicals used in plastics, cosmetics, toys, and other ubiquitous products may be contributing to the rise in obesity in the United States. What you eat and how often you exercise are still obviously extremely important, but researchers are finding that exposure to certain chemicals at critical times of development may predispose you to becoming fat and may make it harder for you to lose weight as an adult.

The chemicals, known as obesogens, mimic natural hormones and can wreak havoc on your endocrine system. Obesogens may explain why we all know skinny people who eat whatever they want and others who gain weight even if they watch everything they eat.

How exactly do obesogens program your body to gain weight? Some can cause your body to make more fat cells, which stay with you for life. Although having more fat cells doesn't mean you'll definitely be overweight, it does make it harder to lose weight. "Fat cells want to…

No need for Islamic or Moral studies tests in UPSR

The Star
KUALA LUMPUR: There is no necessity to make Islamic Studies and Moral Studies a core UPSR subject, Deputy Education Minister Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi told the Dewan Rakyat. He said on Thursday that requiring students to pass the two subjects would not guarantee that they would practise what they learned from them.“Character development and good moral values can be imparted more effectively through education and not by including the subjects in examination,” he said.He was replying to Hamim Samuri (BN-Ledang) on whether the Government planned to make the two subjects as core UPSR subjects.
Nevertheless, Mohd Puad said although not an examination subject, it was compulsory for Muslims students to take Islamic Studies and for non-Muslims students to take Moral Studies.-Bernama

Mutual respect vital

Effective communication with your child starts from infancy.
MANY parents know that punishments and threats do not really work with their young children. It helps to have realistic expectations of your children. Babies are curious about their world. They use their senses to explore their surroundings. Once they grab something, they will put it in their mouths and then throw it down.

When they are exploring, they are not looking for something specific. They want to find out the limits. This is the best time to communicate in the right manner with your baby to help him be cooperative. In every interaction with your baby, show mutual respect. Before giving your four-month-old baby a bath, take some time to talk to him. Make eye contact and tell him exactly what you are going to do.

Your baby may not know exactly what you are saying but he is learning. Even though he is so young, you must use words that reflect your respect for him, including saying “please” and “thank you.” By doing this,…

Does Anyone Still Use Cloth Diapers? - By Lapoli

New parents have heard the argument time and again from their own parents or grandparents. “You young people don’t know how good you have it with those disposable diapers for your babies! When you were a baby I had to use cloth diapers on you and they smelled terribly, I had tons of laundry to do, I stuck myself with pins, and I walked uphill in the snow both ways to get to the diaper service…” and so on. The fact is that, less than thirty years ago, disposable diapers were considered something of a luxury while today they are the norm and people using cloth diapers for their babies are considered to be strange. There are several reasons that modern parents may choose to utilize cloth diapers instead of disposables, however, and in some circles cloth diapers are making a bit of a comeback.
Affordability
The biggest personal reason that a parent may choose to clothe her baby’s bottom in cloth diapers as opposed to Pampers or Huggies is financial. Cloth diapers are simply cheaper than di…

Remembering games of yesteryear - By RUTH LIEW

IT’S the mid-year school holidays! Public places such as theme parks and cinemas are packed with people. What are you doing with your children?Children need to explore and expand their minds. Many children today tend to spend their time in front of the television, computer, or handphone. Children need to find out about the world they live in. They are keen to discover the many talents they may have. There are many inexpensive ideas you can experiment with, without worrying about cost. For starters, go visit the local museums and art galleries.

Check out the public libraries for activities. Apart from being a place where you can borrow books, libraries today plan activities to keep children entertained. Story- telling, art and craft activities and special exhibitions are available free of charge for families with children.Take a walk in the great outdoors and build a collection of leaves and stones. Research has also suggested that walking improves memory and enhances attention.

Babywearing Tips - By Christine Gross-Loh Issue 113, July/August 2002

Six tips to help you wear your baby comfortably and safely.
1. Try several types of carriers. Different ones serve different purposes. Soft structured carriers such as the Ergo are popular among many babywearing parents. Wraps, such as the Moby or GypsyMama are also very versatile, and gorgeous to boot. I highly recommend buying or borrowing a few other types as well. I consider a ring sling to be all-purpose and easy to get baby in and out of, a soft structured carrier or mei tai helpful for longer walks or shopping, and the Korean blanket carrier nice for regular housework or other activities at home. Each has its pros and cons, and you'll be able to figure out what suits you only through experimenting. Because of my small build, not all slings work for me; many are too cumbersome and full of padding, but there are so many out there that you can choose one that fits you well.

2. Be persistent, start early, and try the carrier again if it doesn't seem to w…
